Texas Education Freedom Accounts

The Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program provides educational funding for eligible Texas children.


Application Window: February 4 – March 17, 2026

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must reside in Texas
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or lawfully admitted resident

Required Documents

Parent Information

  • Parent SSN or ITIN
  • Child's SSN
  • 2024 or 2025 Form 1040 Tax Return

Texas Residency Verification

  • Texas Driver's License or State ID

If unavailable, one of the following:

  • Utility bill
  • Lease agreement
  • Mortgage statement
  • Voter registration certificate

Student Verification Documents

(If SSN cannot be verified)

  • Birth certificate
  • Report of birth abroad
  • Certificate of naturalization
  • Certificate of citizenship
  • Other approved documentation

Optional Special Education Documentation

  • Texas IEP
  • Full Individual and Initial Evaluation (FIIE)
  • Out-of-state IEP
  • TEFA Disability Certification Form

Important Information

  • Funding is not awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Applications are reviewed after the application window closes.
  • If eligible applicants exceed available funding, a lottery process is used.
